Basic SEO Techniques

Search engine optimization can be one of the most confusing topics to try and educate yourself about, while at the same time being one of the most important things you need to know to be successful on-line.

It's all about the traffic. If you can't get people to your site, you won't make sales. If your not at the top of the search engine result pages, you won't get much traffic. Plain and simple.

How did SEO become so much of a confusing topic filled with conflicting, good, bad and sometimes completely wrong information? It really all comes down to money. No surprise there right? Internet marketing is an entire industry based around monetizing traffic. Top search engine rankings bring a huge amount of traffic, and marketers see dollar signs in traffic. So they try to game the system, Google responds by changing algorithms, what worked before no longer works, marketers come with up the latest schemes to get top rankings, Google changes algo's and round and round we go.

Unfortunately, honest and legitimate sites who once ranked well may lose rank, or worse get de-listed because of the black hat techniques employed by their so called SEO expert.

But if you know what your doing, and don't try to "trick" the search engines, you'll do fine. Basic SEO techniques haven't changed in years. I'm basically repeating the what you'll find elsewhere, including Google's own webmaster guidelines.

• Target the right searchers by developing a keyword strategy

• Create good content and a well structured site

• Do basic on-page optimization

• Promote your site to get links from other sites

There will always be new strategies and tactics popping up. Just be careful out there and know exactly what the scheme is before you buy into it. Our advice? Stick to the basics.
